Dennis and his older brother Warren are the sons of Rex and Merline (Nee Cook)

His father returned from the second world war in New Guinea to work as a saw miller in the small rural village of Eungai Rail located between Kempsey and Macksville on the north coast of NSW.

Dennis’ grandparents (on his mother’s side) also lived in the same village and it was from this grandfather Jack Cook (one of the last of Australia’s bullock drivers) that he learnt about the bush.

Started painting at the age of 7 and painting oils at 11. 1951-68 lived in Eungai Rail. Secondary school education at Macksville High and Walcha Central School. At Macksville High was the first boy to do elective art.

1973      Graduated Armidale CAE as a secondary school teacher
             Taught in government secondary schools in Sydney and Woollongong from 1974 to 1978
1976      Commenced serious painting
             First solo show at Norfolk Galleries, Paddington, Sydney - "Drawings of Sydney and Surrounds"
             First ventured into Australian inland
1977-78 Painted at Hill End
             Major exhibition - Strawberry Hills Gallery, Surry Hills, Sydney - "Hill End"
1979      Exhibition - Artelier Galley, Dubbo from painting trip to Coober Pedy, Alice Springs and Oodnadatta
             Study London
             Travel and study in France, Germany, Italy, Holland, UK, Switzerland, Persian Gulf, Singapore & Malaysia
1980-81 Lived and worked in Dubbo, Western NSW. Worked on Australian Landscape series for Packer Owned publication "Overlander Magazine". Series ran as centre
                   spread of paintings, stories and drawings on Australian outback locations.
